About Bass-Ack-Words

A little word game from a sleepy patch of pasture called Haybell Holler.

The idea

Bass-Ack-Words started with a simple, slightly ornery question: what if a word game made you do the one thing your brain refuses to do naturally — spell a word backwards? We read and write left-to-right on autopilot. So the game shows you a definition, gives you a few seconds to land on the word, and then asks you to spell it out in reverse before the clock runs dry. Pulling "MEADOW" out of a clue and typing "WODAEM" under pressure breaks that autopilot in the most delightful way. The first time it clicks, you feel a little smarter. The first time you fumble a long one, you laugh. That mix of challenge and good humor is the whole point.

Welcome to Haybell Holler

Rather than drop those puzzles onto a plain white screen, we built them a home. Haybell Holler is a warm, hand-drawn corner of the countryside — wood-plank signs, hay bales, a barn with a money jar on the shelf, and ol' Bo the donkey ambling through it all. Every button is a painted sign, every room has its own feel, and the cash you earn spelling words actually buys things: outfits for your donkey, a ride for the garage, bragging rights on the leaderboard. The puzzles are the engine; the Holler is the reason you stay.

Made by hand

Bass-Ack-Words is an independent labor of love — designed, written, illustrated, and tuned by one small team that cares more about charm than flash. The art is original to the Holler. The word lists are hand-checked. The little touches — the way the donkey changes clothes, the jar that tells you whether you're broke or loaded, the surprise hidden behind a perfect mini-game score — are all there because somebody thought they'd make you smile.

Free to play

The game is, and will stay, free to play in your browser. There's nothing to download and nothing to buy to enjoy it. Ads on the surrounding pages help keep the lights on so the game itself can stay open to everyone. If you'd like to support it, simply playing — and telling a friend who loves words — means the world.
